What In Fact is Dedicated Web Hosting?

When we talk about hosting web servers, there are three basic varieties - website hosting servers, VPS (virtual servers) and dedicated web hosting. Shared hosting servers accommodate lots of customers and so the resources per account are restricted, VPS web hosting give you more configuration freedom, but also affect other private virtual servers on the hardware node if used imprudently, and dedicated web hosting servers offer you the possibility to do everything you wish without intervening with anyone else.

Why would you require a dedicated web hosting servers?

Dedicated web hosting servers are normally much more expensive than shared web hosting servers or virtual servers. Why would anyone, then, use them? The reply is very simple. If your firm has a heavy resource-requiring web page, or just has very explicit web server setup requirements, the best choice is a dedicated web hosting servers. For someone who is inclined to invest in security and stability, the bigger price is not a problem. You are given complete root-level access and can use 100 percent of the hosting web server's system resources without anyone else sharing these resources and interfering with your web pages.

Hardware specs

Most website hosting service providers, incl. us at SmartNations, offer different hardware configurations you can choose from depending on your requirements. The hardware configurations include different sorts of microprocessors, a different number of cores, different RAM memory and server hard disk sizes and different monthly bandwidth usage quotas. You can choose a hosting CP, which is a handy GUI if you would like to use the dedicated web hosting servers for web hosting purposes solely and prefer not to resort to an SSH terminal for all the changes you will be making. We offer 3 types of hosting Control Panel software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.

The web hosting Control Panel of your choice

If you are a self-assured Linux user (our dedicated hosting servers are powered by Linux or other Unix-based Operating Systems), you could administer your dedicated web hosting through an SSH console exclusively. That, however, could be awkward, especially if you choose to give full root privileges to somebody else who has less technical proficiency than yourself. That is why having web hosting Control Panel software pre-installed is an excellent idea. The Hepsia hosting Control Panel interface that we provide does not give you full root privileges and is mainly suitable for someone who maintains lots of sites that devour a lot of system resources, but wishes to administer the web sites, databases and mailboxes through an intuitive web hosting CP. The DirectAdmin and cPanel web hosting CPs, on the other hand, give you complete server root access and have three access levels - root, reseller and user. If you plan to resell hosting packages instead of utilizing the dedicated web hosting servers solely for yourself, you should select one of these two.

Web server monitoring and backup procedures

Last but not least, there is the matter of monitoring the dedicated web hosting servers and of backing it up. In the event of a problem with your web server, like a non-responsive Apache or an outage, it is advisable to have some sort of monitoring system activated. Here at SmartNations the system administrators monitor all dedicated web hosting servers for ping timeouts, and, if you have a Managed Services package, they monitor the individual services on the dedicated web hosting servers too. Backups are also an extra feature - the web hosting solutions provider offers you data backups on our own backup web servers. You could pick a kind of RAID that would allow you to keep the same data on two hard disks as a protective measure in the event of a hard disk drive failure, or in case someone whom you have ranted complete root access erases something by accident.
